NYAGATARE - The Executive Secretary of Karama sector, Nyagatare district, Stanley Muganwa, blamed the power blacks out in the district for failure to complete the construction of classrooms for the 9-year basic education. 

According to Muganwa, construction work that requires electricity like the welding of doors and windows could not be done.

"Power goes off every morning and comes back at 5pm in the evening,” he said.  

The Eastern Province has been experiencing power blacks out since the beginning of this month. 

According to officials from Rwanda Electricity company (RECO) in Nyagatare district, power cuts are a result of the ongoing connection works of the under sea optic fibre cables in the province. 

Close to 300 classroom blocks are being constructed in Nyagatare district, 14 of which   are in Karama sector. Some construction sites have resorted to doing their work at night in an endeavor to beat the deadline of February1, when schools are scheduled to open.

Muganwa however, said that despite the electricity problem, residents have decided to undertake  construction works during community work commonly known as Umuganda. 

‘Our residents have joined hands in to make sure that children are able to  attend school  by Tuesday February 2,’ he said.
