10 districts bracing for heavy rain late January

Rwanda is set for moderate to heavy rainfall from January 21 to 31.

Residents of 10 districts across Rwanda are in for a rainy end to the month of January as the national weather agency has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall between January 21 and 31.

The Rwanda Meteorology Agency (Meteo Rwanda) announced this week that the country should expect to receive between 7mm and 110mm of rainfall during the 10-day period.

The New Times, in this article, looks at the 10 districts that should expect the highest amount of rainfall.

  1. Rusizi: Expected to receive the highest amount in the bracket of 90mm to 110mm.
  2. Nyamasheke: Parts of the district are also in the peak 90-110mm range.
  3. Nyaruguru: Forecasted for heavy downpours between 90mm and 110mm.
  4. Nyamagabe: Western parts will see up to 110mm, with the rest seeing 70-90mm.
  5. Karongi: Significant rainfall reaching up to 110mm in southern and northern parts.
  6. Rutsiro: Central parts are set for the highest bracket of 90-110mm.
  7. Rubavu: A portion of the southern area is expected to hit the 110mm mark.
  8. Huye: Western parts of the district are slated for 70mm to 90mm.
  9. Nyanza: Similar to Huye, western sections will receive 70mm to 90mm.
  10. Musanze: Northern and western sectors are expected to experience 70mm to 90mm.

Outlook for rest of country

The remaining parts of the Western Province, as well as northern and western Musanze and northern Burera, are also expected to receive significant rainfall between 70mm and 90mm, MeteoRwanda indicated in the announcement.

In the capital, northern parts of Kigali City are forecasted to receive between 50mm and 70mm. The same range applies to the remaining areas of Northern and Southern Provinces.

Eastern Province and other remaining regions are likely to see lighter totals, generally between 30mm and 50mm.

The agency showed that the eastern parts of Nyagatare, Gatsibo, and Kayonza will likely receive lower rainfall ranging between 7mm and 30mm.
