Rwanda’s most acclaimed athletes will not participate in the inaugural edition of the national championship Times Sport has learnt.

Dieudonne Disi and Angelina Nyiransabimana have been ruled out of the two-day event that gets under this Saturday at Amahoro Stadium.

Disi, already in Nigeria, left on Tuesday to participate in a half marathon race while Nyiransabimana is camping at her Eldoret base ahead of next year’s Olympic Games.

The two athletes who are also the country’s latest beneficiaries of the Olympic Solidarity (OS) scholarships hold different local records.

Disi is the defending champion in the 5000m, 1000m and half marathon while Nyiransabimana broke the 15-year old 5000m record by clocking 23: 17:00 in the Osaka event.

The national championship has a variety of races ranging from 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m, 400x4m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10000m, javelin, short put, discus, long and high jump amongst others.

Over 336 athletes have lined up for the championship that also serves as a selection base for the Beijing Games.
