The Ugandan Basketball Federation (FUBA) on Tuesday confirmed Bosnian Goran Lojo as the country’s new head coach.

Lojo, 49, replaces American Georges Galanopoulos, who coached the Silverbacks across three AfroBasket editions in 2017, 2019 and 2021.

Lojo previously worked with the Ugandan women's national team.

One of the coach's most successful coaching jobs was leading his native Bosnia and Herzegovina to fifth place in the 2021 Women's EuroBasket. He was also at the helm when the country finished bottom of the 12-nation 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Australia.

FUBA described Lojo as "an experienced international coach who brings a strong background in national teams, elite club basketball and youth development across Europe.”

"His appointment reflects FUBA’s commitment to strengthening the competitiveness and global profile of Ugandan basketball," the federation added.

Uganda will open their qualifying campaign for the 2027 World Cup in Cairo in February, taking on Group D opponents Angola, hosts Egypt and Mali.

Four months ago, Uganda finished 15th in the AfroBasket tournament, which was described as a decline compared to their sixth-place finish in the 2021 edition.

In the Angolan capital, they lost all three of their games against Egypt, Mali and Senegal.
