Medium taxpayers with an annual turnover of Rwf400m will be obliged to have their annual tax declarations and financial statements certified.

According to the ministerial order No.006/2009 of 01/12/2009 certified tax returns and financial statements will facilitate taxpayers to avoid previous penalties incurred due to errors made during tax declarations and payment.

Gerard Mukubu, the Director for Taxpayer Services at RRA, highlighted that the importance of having certified tax returns is to encourage professionalism within the business community and facilitate the work of auditors.

Taxpayers will be confident of their data and their business; the problem of incertitude will never happen
"Providing certified copies will help to reduce complaints between the RRA and taxpayers,” he said, pointing out that the exercise will also help to minimize errors in the tax payer’s books of account.

"This exercise has to be done through qualified tax accountants registered under the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Rwanda (ICPAR) of which a list has been published through the media,” Mukubu noted.

However, the ministerial order excludes distributors of beers, lemonades, cement and owners of Forex bureaus.

Medium taxpayers are encouraged to submit certified tax returns and financial statements of 2009 before the deadline of March 31, 2010.
