THE Senate has elected new heads of the four senatorial standing committees to run its activities in the next four years.

The elections were held during Friday’s plenary session at the Senate offices in Kacyiru.
Joseph Karemera was elected president of the Political and Good Governance Committee, while Faustin Munyakabera was elected as his deputy. Valens Munyabagisha retained the chairmanship of the Commission of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Security, while Agnes Mukabaranga was elected his vice.

The Commission of Social Affairs and Human Rights is now headed by Agnes Kayijire and deputised by Dr Odette Nyiramirimo.
Senators Specioza Ayinkamiye and Chrysologue Kubwimana were elected president and vice president, respectively, for the Economic Commission.

Antoine Mugesera (president) and Anastaze Nzirasanaho (vice president) were re-elected to lead the Disciplinary commission.

The Senate President Dr Vincent Biruta said that the newly elected committee members have assumed responsibilities that would help in running the activities of the upper chamber of Parliament.

He urged them to act responsibly to achieve the intended objectives of the senate.
Senator Mugesera said that the task ahead is not easy and called for the cooperation of all senators to see that they properly run the assumed responsibilities.

Mugesera however proposed a retreat aimed at reviewing the senate activities during the year 2007 which would guide them for upcoming activities.
