Man killed for stealing bananas

RUBAVU – A 52-year old man in Rubavu district, Edison Ntaganda, a resident of Nyamyumba sector was on Wednesday night hacked to death for allegedly stealing bananas. Ntaganda’s body was found the following morning near a banana plantation belonging to his neighbour who has been arrested by police as a prime suspect along with three others.

RUBAVU – A 52-year old man in Rubavu district, Edison Ntaganda, a resident of Nyamyumba sector was on Wednesday night hacked to death for allegedly stealing bananas.

Ntaganda’s body was found the following morning near a banana plantation belonging to his neighbour who has been arrested by police as a prime suspect along with three others. 

"We found his badly mutilated body and police took it to Gisenyi Hospital for autopsy,” Esperance Dukundimana, the executive secretary of Nyamyumba sector said. "He was later buried but suspects have been apprehended by police.”

Dukundimana, identified the suspects as Jean Damascène Bizimungu, Jean Maurice Rukara and Innocent Uwimana a neighbour to the deceased.

A police officer who spoke to The New Times on condition of anonymity because he does not speak for the institution, said the motive of the murder is yet to be confirmed but it is suspected he was caught stealing bananas.
