2026 is here. Let us celebrate but also reflect
Thursday, January 01, 2026

As the first light of 2026 breaks, it offers Rwanda a moment to pause, to breathe, and to acknowledge the gift of life. On this New Year’s Day, we extend warm wishes of a happy 2026 to all Rwandans at home and in the diaspora, as well as to every resident who calls this country home.

This is a shared celebration, bound not by geography but by common purpose and hope.

New Year celebrations are, at their heart, an affirmation of life. They give families the chance to gather, communities to reconnect, and individuals to take pride in milestones achieved and challenges overcome.

Over the past year, many Rwandans have registered progress in their personal lives, strengthened family bonds, contributed to their communities, and added in countless ways to the country’s steady march forward. These achievements deserve recognition, for they are the building blocks of national progress.

Yet the arrival of a new year is not only about looking back with gratitude. It is also an invitation to look ahead with clarity and responsibility. Rwanda’s journey of development is ongoing, shaped daily by the choices of its citizens.

Whether in public service or private enterprise, in classrooms, farms, offices, or homes, each individual has a role to play in shaping the nation we aspire to become. Collective discipline, hard work, and a shared sense of responsibility remain central to sustaining the gains made and unlocking new opportunities.

It is in this spirit that celebrations should be approached with caution. Joy should never come at the cost of safety or dignity. Overindulgence, particularly in alcohol consumption, has in the past turned moments of happiness into scenes of tragedy, claiming lives and straining families. Such outcomes are avoidable.

True celebration lies not in excess, but in moderation and mindfulness, ensuring that everyone welcomes the new year safely and with hope intact.

As 2026 begins, let it be marked not only by festivities, but also by renewed commitment. Commitment to personal growth, to caring for one another, and to contributing positively to the nation’s development agenda.

Let celebrations strengthen social bonds rather than weaken them, and let joy be shared in ways that protect life and uphold our collective values.

May this new year inspire reflection, responsibility, and resolve. Happy 2026 to all, and may it be a year defined by progress, unity, and purpose for Rwanda and all who live within its borders.
