GISAGARA – Police in Gisagara district together with Musha Sector officials last Friday destroyed 100 kgs of marijuana as part of efforts to curb drug abuse in the district.

The large quantity of marijuana was impounded from the Sectors of Gishubi and Mamba which are located at the Rwanda-Burundi border. Residents say the drugs are smuggled from Burundi.

However, according to Police sources, some of the marijuana is grown from within the area. The source said that one farmer from Mamba Sector was arrested after marijuana was found on his farm.

After destroying the drugs, Police and sector authorities sensitized the population about the negative consequences of consuming drugs, urging them to report any cases of the sale and consumption of drugs in their localities.

Musha sector authorities vowed to step up sensitization campaigns against drug abuse after the realization that their use is on the rise.

"We will collaborate with the population in general and the community policing committees to find out where such drugs are kept, and those dealing in this illegal business,” said Cesar Igiraneza , a sector official.
