The SundayMag team would like you to join it in observing a moment of silence for the people of Haiti who were devastated by a massive earthquake recently. Thousands lost their lives, many more are in dire need of medication and other basic supplies, some are still trapped under the rubble, millions are homeless, and the nation is traumatised.
The damage that the quake caused is too huge for a single nation to handle.

Hopefully, all nations will come aboard and support Haiti in any way possible. The aid also needs to reach the affected people as fast as possible. It would be totally unhelpful if the supplies came in after half of the intended beneficiaries have breathed their last.

They say there is always a lesson in adversity. What happened in Haiti could easily happen in any part of the world, it is a natural disaster after all.

We should look at our nations’ disaster preparedness levels. We should know which areas are more likely to be affected by earthquakes and only authorise structures that can withstand the strongest of them.

Some measures may seem quite expensive in the short run but their value is appreciated when what they were set up against strikes.

Let’s pray that the people of Haiti will recover from this tragedy.
