The Social Security Fund of Rwanda (SSFR) and the Housing Bank of Rwanda (HBR), the joint developers of the 100 hectares of land in Kinyinya, Gasabo District, have been instructed to immediately work on the drainage problem that has caused floods in the area affecting close to 180 families.

Speaking to The New Times, the acting Mayor of Gasabo, Willy Ndizeye, said that the developers have been ordered to halt their activities in the area and first focus on ways of putting in place a proper drainage system.

The affected residents allege that the floods were caused by lack of water drainage channels from the land that is being developed by the two institutions.

Close to 180 families in Rugarama, Kinyinya sector were Sunday forced to abandon their homes after a heavy down pour.

The residents turned to drilling holes in their houses to release the water which left some of their structures on the verge of collapse.

"Whatever measures to protect these people have to be taken immediately,’’ Ndizeye said.
