Illegal drugs worth Rwf5m were destroyed.

BURERA – Border residents have been warned against cross border crimes as authorities destroyed over 3000 litres of local gin, Kanyanga and 1310 litres of chief waragi.

7 kgs of marijuana was also grabbed as the crack down on illegal drug trafficking intensifies.

Speaking to the residents in Cyanika sector, Burera district Mayor, Samuel Sembagari said trafficking and consumption of drugs like marijuana and local gin were rampant among residents living on the Rwanda-Uganda border.

The Regional Police Commander, Chief Supt. Rogers Rutikanga, noted that most of the crimes especially domestic violence and fights are linked to drug abuse.

Cyanika is said to be the entry point for the banned liquor which is smuggled in from Kisoro, Uganda, while marijuana is smuggled through Bunagana, DR Congo.

Sembagari warned that the drugs are not only a danger to people’s health but also destroy the society because they encourage criminal activities.
