MUHANGA - The district authorities have  resolved to privatise Gitarama and Nyabisindu Markets in a bid to increase its tax base and improve service delivery, an official has disclosed.

According to Vivens Ukubaho, the district tax officer, at least 20 potential private investors have expressed interest in buying the assets which make up the two markets.

"The District Advisory Council (DAC) has recommended the process and the tender request will be announced on January 28,’ he said.

"Various studies done indicate that it will increase the tax base and improve services in areas where district officials have not been able to do well,” Ukubaho said.

The district has been losing a lot of taxes due to tax evasion. It is understood that the trend will change with the assets in the hands of private individuals.
