Editor,

I would like to congratulate Dedan K. Nkuranga for writing the best article, in my view, in The Sunday Times (Students behaving badly at universities).

He was right about the execrable behavior of some university students. But their negative attitudes have little to do with their village origins.

Rather, this anti-social behavior reflects an erroneous interpretation of "freedom” to mean the ‘doing whatever, whenever and wherever they want’.

This reminds me of a funny incident that happened to one university friend. She walked into a bar hoping to hide obnoxious behavior in the anonymity of campus life now that she was no longer identifiable by the high school uniform.

After sipping the now freely accessible beer several times she turned her defiant eyes around the bar room and straight into the disapproving eyes of her next-door neighbor from the village.

Let us just say that my college-mate became the‘headline’ in her remote village for the next three painful years. The rumor was that she had gone to the big city to become "a bar prostitute”.

Fortunately in those days the names of the graduating students were printed in the local newspapers. Otherwise the skeptical villagers would still be hanging on to the juicy story.

I other words, negative behavior will certainly catch up with you; maybe be not at university, but certainly later.
