RWANDA Athletics Federation (RAF) is unveiling new plans to seek permanent partners for the federation’s traditional events.

The traditional events include the annual National Cross Country usually held in March, the Kigali International Peace Marathon, Kigali 20Km road race and the National championship, Rendezvous National.

According to RAF president Jean Munyandamutsa, the goal is to groom athletes for the 2016 Olympic Games which will be held in Brazil.

"With better sponsorship for these events, we can certainly improve on the performance of our local athletes,” said Munyandamutsa.

The federation anticipates to, at least, field 15 athletes in 2016. For the 2012 London Games, the official noted that five athletes is a realistic number.

"For the 2012 Games, we are looking at five athletes.”
With better preparations, Munyandamutsa does not see why local athletes cannot beat the 2012 Olympic Games minimums.

Meanwhile, there are also plans to develop an International Athletics Center. The proposed center to be sponsored by the International Athletics Associations Federation (IAAF) will be the first of its kind in the country.
