A Rwanda Food and Drug Authority (Rwanda FDA) inspector and an alcohol businesswoman have been arrested by Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) in an ongoing corruption and bribery investigation.

In a statement released on Monday, November 17, RIB identified the suspects as Emmanuel Nsoneye, an inspector at Rwanda FDA, and Beatha Uwamariya, an owner of an alcohol-producing plant in Bugesera District.

According to RIB, the two were apprehended after investigations revealed that Nsoneye allegedly solicited and received bribes from Uwamariya, the proprietor of Dusangire Production Ltd.

The bribes were reportedly offered in exchange for illegal exemptions from regulatory inspections conducted by Rwanda FDA.

Their case files have been submitted to the prosecution, and both suspects remain in custody at RIB stations in Nyarugenge and Nyamata.

RIB warned producers of substandard goods to cease the practice, calling it a serious breach of the law. RIB officials also cautioned public officials against abusing their authority for personal gain, noting that such conduct is a criminal offence and will not be tolerated.
