KARONGI - It was an exciting moment for over 50,000 refugees at Kiziba, Gihembe and Nyabiheke refugee camps as they received an assortment of donations on Christmas eve.

According to Richard Ndaula, the UNHCR Head of Field Office in Byumba, it was the first time they received a donation of such a magnitude.

"We have always had donations before, but not in quantities that reach every refugee family,” he said.

75- year old Samuel Sebanuta expressed gratitude and satisfaction as he received a woollen blanket. "I usually feel cold on this hilly camp. I say thanks for the blankets and clothes and God bless these donors,”

Sources said that on Christmas eve, UNHCR staff worked overtime to ensure that all refugee families received the donations

The donations which came on time to serve as Christmas and New Year presents were from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS), whose headquarters is in Salt City, Utah, USA.

The LDS Church is commonly referred to as the Mormon Church.
