DRC- Following recent series of setbacks faced by the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebels, especially the arrest of their top leaders, in Germany, more FDLR fighters are deserting. One of the deserters currently in Mutobo demobilization Centre confirmed the developments. Although he could not divulge more details over the phone, he noted that more of his former colleagues have lost morale and are fleeing their commanders.
DRC- Following recent series of setbacks faced by the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebels, especially the arrest of their top leaders, in Germany, more FDLR fighters are deserting.
One of the deserters currently in Mutobo demobilization Centre confirmed the developments. Although he could not divulge more details over the phone, he noted that more of his former colleagues have lost morale and are fleeing their commanders.
"Things are not really well and people are fleeing – they are of low rank but even then, they are coming in every other week,” the deserter told Sunday Times yesterday.
The FDLR seem to have been hit a blow by the November 18 arrest of their leader Ignace Murwanashyaka and his deputy, Straton Musoni, in Germany.
The German Federal Prosecution is still continuing with investigations into the duo’s terrorism links.
Categorized as a terrorist outfit, FDLR is made up of remnant of Interahamwe and Ex-FAR who spearheaded the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.
They have long been entrenched in Eastern DRC, killing, raping and pillaging, despite international efforts to dislodge them.
