NYAGATARE – The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA- Rwanda) on Wednesday concluded its intervention activities in Nyagatare district, after a three-year presence.

ADRA-Rwanda had centred its interventions around an umbrella ‘Catch up’ project whose focus was on training of beneficiaries on income generating activities and family planning as well as construction of resource centres.

Speaking at the official closure of their programme in Rukomo sector, Martin Rutazigwa, ADRA’s project manager in Nyagatare district, noted that the project had surpassed its targets.

On the construction of resource centres, Rutazigwa said 54 desktop computers, 5 radios and 4 television sets were distributed in five sectors of the district to improve access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

He added that several residents were trained in different skills including soap making and poultry farming.

‘ADRA has during its three- year mandate managed to train residents in various income generating projects,’ he said.

Rutazigwa added that 2,600 local residents were taught how to read and write and a number of school dropouts were taken back to school under the ‘Catch up’ programme.

During the ceremony, 469 teachers who participated in training residents in literacy skills were awarded certificates.

Rutazigwa thanked the district for the good cooperation which rendered their activities a success.

On behalf of the district, Mary Kantengwa, the district executive secretary, commended ADRA, appealing to beneficiaries to put into good use the skills they acquired.

‘ADRA has offered you knowledge that will guide you in your daily endeavours. You need to carefully put it into good use these skills,’ she said.
