Epaphrodite Binamungu

A fine artist since childhood, he has been drawing and painting and these skills have become a natural and vital part of his life.

From realism to abstraction, Epa Binamungu is a 55 year-old painter who is engaged with rigour and sensitivity in the study of materials.  He uses fiscus, sand, wood, objects like pearls or shells, and many more to depict life through his paintings.

Always in bond with his culture and colourful palette, through collages to smithereens, scraping to polishing, Epa reveals his constant interrogation on Art.

His first exhibition was in 1973 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since then he gained momentum and to date, he has exhibited more of his work in Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania as well as internationally in Europe and the USA.

In 2002, the art veteran created his own art gallery in Kigali, popularly known as, "Nganzo Art Gallery.”
In September 2009, he had a solo exhibition dubbed ‘Ngoma’ that was a success.

His commitment to developing and selling Rwandan art internationally has won him various awards. Through public collections his works are displayed in both public and private institutions countrywide.
