The National Agricultural Research Institute (ISAR) will next year be in position to produce seeds of high breed maize called ISAR MO81. According to Dr. Claver Ngaboyisonga, Geneticist and program coordinator said the high breed maize that takes 100 days to harvest has undergone a series of improvement measures mainly on disease resistance since 2001.
The National Agricultural Research Institute (ISAR) will next year be in position to produce seeds of high breed maize called ISAR MO81.
According to Dr. Claver Ngaboyisonga, Geneticist and program coordinator said the high breed maize that takes 100 days to harvest has undergone a series of improvement measures mainly on disease resistance since 2001.
"We established research stations where we planted the ISAR MO81 maize breed. This will help us make a big harvest so that seeds reach different communities,” Ngaboyisonga said.
Ngaboyisonga said that through the Rwanda Agriculture Development Authority (RADA), the seeds will start to be distributed across the country.
"We expect to harvest about 400 tones of ISAR MO81 seeds from the research stations of Bugesera, Nyagatare, Rubona, and Bugarama among others,” he said.
He said that quantity and quality harvest of the new breed depends on the amount of care and agricultural methods used. He pointed out that average harvest stands at 6.5 tonnes per hectare in semi-arid areas.
