Tosin Aiyegun’s 80th-minute strike handed Benin a crucial 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali, effectively ending the hosts' hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Aiyegun, who came on as a second-half substitute, tapped into the net after fellow substitute Romaric Amoussou flicked on a long pass and set him up for an easy finish.

The match had been tight and tense, with few clear chances in the first half. Rwanda, needing a win to stay in contention, showed greater urgency after the break but failed to convert the opportunities.

The home crowd was left stunned as the final whistle confirmed their elimination from World Cup contention.

The victory not only ends Rwanda’s campaign but also reshapes the top of Group C. Benin now sits on top with 17 points, three ahead of Nigeria, heading into the final matchday.

The result also delivers a heavy blow to Nigeria's qualification hopes. Despite a 2-1 comeback win over Lesotho, the Super Eagles are in less control of their own destiny.

In the group's other key fixture, Zimbabwe and South Africa played out a hard-fought draw, further tightening the race for qualification.
