The chairperson of Transparency International-Rwanda chapter, Marie Immaculee Ingabire, has urged the government to also focus its attention to the low levels of leadership.

Speaking to The New Times at the conclusion of the national anti- corruption week, Ingabire said that she has observed that more attention was being given to high profile government officials leaving the lower local government authorities having a field day.

"Much as there is political will to fight corruption, efforts should also be taken lower in all sectors to uproot the problem,” she said.

"Yes, many high profile government officials have been arrested, but most corruption cases occur on the sector and cell levels which is affecting the population very much.

"Many residents have claimed that, when they ask for services they are entitled to, they are given appointments in bars”.

Ingabire also cited the traffic police, judges and local government authorities as the public institutions where corruption is still entrenched. 

Speaking at the same function, the Speaker of Parliament, Rose Mukantabana, called upon government institutions to join efforts in the fight against corruption.

Gisagara, Musanze and Huye districts were recognised for their fight against corruption and were awarded by the office of the Ombudusman and Transparency International.
