Nyarugenge district has turned down a request by the commuter taxi association (ATRACO) to reduce its monthly charges for using Nyabugogo Taxi Park.

Currently, ATRACO pays Rwf10m per month to Nyarugenge district which the association says is high

"After a three-day consultative meeting of the financial technical team, we made a resolution of not reducing the fees that ATRACO is paying,” said Berchmas Kamali, the acting Mayor of Nyarugenge.

"If they cannot afford it, we shall give it to other operators.”

Citing the hefty charges, ATRACO currently imposes a daily fee of Rwf 2,300 on every minibus that uses the park, a price that was lowered from Rwf3,800 after the taximen complained.

However, Kamali reaffirmed that the association was doing good business depending on its monthly earnings.

"I have said this before and I will repeat it ATRACO is able to cover its costs and remain in profitable business,” Kamali said.

He also explained that the commuter’s request was not backed by proof to support inability to pay.

Meanwhile the African Development Corporation (ADC) in collaboration with SORAS, a local insurance company have earmarked Rwf 2.5bn package to redevelop Nyabugogo bus terminal.
