KARONGI – Passengers plying the Kigali-Karongi route are the beneficiaries of price wars between public transport companies on the route.

Sotra tours and Capital express, the two major public transport operators have reduced fares from Rwf2200 to Rwf2000 while ATRACO, the Commuter Taxi Operators’ Association have kept it as low as Rwf1700.

With the introduction of new buses by the government run transport company, ONATRACOM which also charges Rwf1700, the passengers now have a variety of options.

Scores of passengers who waited to board one of the new ONATRACOM buses to Kigali yesterday expressed happiness about the price decrease.

"Apart from being new and comfortable, these buses also charge little money compared to the rest,” Apollo Dusabyemungu said.

Patrick Bagire, ATRACO’s regional representative in Karongi district explained that reducing their price by a significant amount was a way of attracting more customers while also keeping old ones.
