Editor,

In your newspaper yesterday you reported that youth minister Protais Mitali as having been irked by the existence in thousands of grass-thatched houses in the Southern Province.

This should not happen in our today’s Rwanda given the socio-economic transformation on which our government has embarked.

People should respect the June 2010 deadline to have phased out the grass-thatched houses or even achieve it before the deadline because our country has emerged as an achiever in different aspects.

Also, local authorities have to be put on board to see the families that cannot afford to do away with the grass-thatched houses so that some assistance can be extended to them either from central government or from their neighbours to ensure that they get rid of this type of roofing which not only portray under-development but can also be dangerous especially in an even of fire outbreak.
