NYAGATARE – A 52-year-old man from Katabagemu sector in Nyagatare district is being detained at Karangazi Police Post for allegedly hacking and seriously injuring his wife with a machete.

Leopold Ntakobatagira, is said to have assaulted Virginie Kadusenge, 47, on Tuesday morning after a domestic quarrel.

Speaking to The New Times from her hospital bed at Nyagatare Hospital, Kadusenge said she feels she survived death miraculously.

‘It’s only God who saved me from losing my life,” she said. "He wanted to cut my neck but instead I injured the arm.”
According to Kadusenge, it started like a normal day.

Her husband woke up and asked to be served breakfast. But as soon as she had started preparing food, she was attacked.

She claimed that her husband had often threatened to kill her.

‘Whenever he could come from the bar at night drunk, he could threaten that he will one day kill me.  I reported to local leaders these threats but nothing was done until he attacked me on Tuesday morning,’ she said.

‘Even though it is widely known that we have had family wrangles, I am sure that  he had planned to kill me as he  sent all the children to the garden before the fight started ,’ she said.

The couple have 10 children and have been living together for the last 29 years.

According to recent reports from the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion, Nyagatare district ranks second countrywide with high cases of gender based violence.
