Rwanda National Police shot and killed three suspected criminals in Kamonyi District after they tried to attack officers, who had caught them assaulting people with machetes and knives during the night of September 16 to 17.

CIP Hassan Kamanzi, Police Spokesperson for Southern Province, told The New Times that the incident happened at a bar located in Raro Village, Kabuga Cell, Ngamba Sector of Kamonyi District.

"The thugs were engaged in violent acts, attacking people with machetes and knives bars to rob them," said Kamanzi.

He added that robbers had injured four residents, who were later taken to Remera Rukoma Hospital for treatment.

The police officer reassured the public that security agencies remain vigilant and will not tolerate individuals who attempt to destabilise peace and safety through violent criminal acts.

Further details will be provided after an investigation into the matter is complete, he added.

According to media reports, the attackers were armed with traditional weapons, including machetes, knives, and other sharp objects.

The assailants are said to have attempted to confront police officers, when they arrived at the scene.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to local media said the suspects stormed the bar and ordered patrons to raise their hands and prevented anyone from leaving.
