KARONGI – Failure to collect fines ordered by courts in Karongi and Rutsiro districts is affecting the performance of the judiciary, an official has disclosed.

Adolphe Udahemuka, the acting president of Karongi Intermediate Court said that since he judicial reforms made after 1994, fines amounting to Rwf 58, 437,000 have not been collected by the districts.

"It is important that a reliable way of collecting the accumulating fines is established otherwise this will compromise upholding of court verdicts,” Udahemuka said in a statement released last week.

The statement also cites a backlog of cases as another challenge the court is facing.

"We received 702 cases this year, the judges are determined to work tirelessly to dispose of any pending cases with effect from next year,” Udahemuka added.
According to the statement, 183 cases are pending.
