TOO good to be true! That is how Rayon Sport fans feel about the proposed sponsorship deal with new telecommunications company tigo.

Last week, it was reported that the Blues’ Secretary General Olivier Gakwaya had held sponsorship talks with the mobile company prompting club fans to start dreaming of a return to the glorious days of the late 90s.

The club’s last major silverware came in 2004 when they lifted the league trophy and many  fans believe that the club’s recent financial woes are to blame for Rayon’s trophy drought.

Last season, some players threatened to walk out on the club due to unpaid salaries.

Jean Claude Niyirora, a teller in BCR thinks Tigo can revive the club’s fading reputation. "We are underperforming because the club has no funds but with Tigo’s support, I think we shall be in position to match APR and Atraco.”

Gabriel Hategekimana, a cab driver said he is ready to ditch MTN for Tigo if the latter sponsor the club which has the following of his whole family.

"It’s obvious that Rayon is struggling because of financial woes but with Tigo in the picture, we can have a good chance,” Hategekimana said.

Fred Muvunyi, a business student at Kigali Independent University meanwhile reasons that Tigo stands to gain a lot by sponsoring his favorite club.

"Rayon has the biggest following in the country which means that if Tigo come on board, they will gain from this lot because at Rayon, we always give back to those who help the club.”
