MUSANZE – One child was killed yesterday while another was left seriously injured, after being assaulted by a man wielding a blunt hoe in Cyuve sector, Musanze district.

The children’s mother identified as Tamari Mukampabuke, 54, escaped with minor injuries after being rescued by residents.

The attacker, Semayeri Gakoti, of Kabatwa in Nyabihu district has been arrested and detained by Musanze police.

Eye witnesses said the assailant who emerged from a banana plantation, struck and killed a 2-year old boy first, before turning his fury over and hitting a 4-year old girl on the fore head, before wrestling with their mother.

By the time residents arrived at the scene, the mother had cut the assailant with a machete on his head.

According to the Cyuve Executive Secretary, Claude Manzi, the motive of the attacker was yet to be established.

However, Manzi said the accused is a genocide suspect.
