NYAGATARE – About 1,900 families in the drought-stricken sector of Rwimiyaga in Nyagatare district have struck a deal where they will plant trees, build terraces, repair destroyed feeder roads and in return get maize and beans.
Speaking to The New Times yesterday, Rwimiyaga sector’s Executive Secretary, George Kabayija said they have already selected residents to participate in the initiative.
‘Priority has been given to residents who were adversely affected by drought,’ he said.
According to Kabayija, participants will be given 3kg of maize and 2kg of beans for each day of work.
Umutara Community Resources and Development program (PDRICIU) is in charge of the program that was designed to help residents whose food production was affected by the long drought that hit the area.
Rwimiyaga sector has not received enough rain since the last dry season.
