Carrying posters and banners condemning gender based violence, the refugees chanted songs condemning the vice. The march was organised by Africa Humanitarian Action (AHA) which runs a sexual and gender based violence programme at the camp.

The march was organised by Africa Humanitarian Action (AHA) which runs a sexual and gender based violence programme at the camp.
According to statistics obtained from AHA, 11 cases are received per month in the camp of which 60 per cent are domestic violence.
In his speech, Emmanuel Santos, the head of UNHCR in Karongi district, emphasised the need to end violence against women.
"You should heed to the messages on your posters so that in the next year you can be proud of your achievements,” Santos said.
He noted that it doesn’t make sense to keep making resolutions to avoid gender based violence without implementing them.
"Committing violence against women can be equated to crimes against humanity because women are the mothers of all mankind,” Gakuba Murangira, an official from AHA said.
