The Association for Kigali Women Sports (AKWOS) inaugurated a one-month competitive championship for all sectors of Kigali city over the weekend.

The association’s president, Felicite Rwemalika said that the championship which has attracted both men and women is being played to mark Kigali City’s 100 years in existence.

"The championship has attracted most sectors of the city. Already, 32 of the 35 sectors have confirmed their participation,” Rwemalika said.

"Though the championship is largely a female event, men’s involvement in sports is fundamental which is why we have brought men on board,” she added.

Rwemalika emphasized that such tournaments help fight genocide ideologies through uniting players.

On top of football, the championship also includes Volleyball, karate and basketball for the disabled.

The championship has been jointly sponsored by Kigali City and Nike; an international sport wear company.

The championship will climax September 23 with a 10km race around Kigali city.
