RUSIZI – Police in Rusizi district are hunting for unknown people who allegedly destroyed crops belonging to Florien Niyitegeka, a Gacaca witness in Gihundwe sector.

Niyitegeka, 35, said that he woke up on Monday morning and found close to 150 coffee trees cut down. This came after his plantation of beans and maize had also been destroyed last week.

Niyitegeka recently gave a testimony pinning genocide suspects in the area and he suspects they revenged by destroying his crops.

"I don’t know their motive but they have been threatening to do something bad against me,” he said.

Niyitegeka named Diogène Nsabimana and Verodiana Mukamana as the suspects.

The executive secretary of Kagara cell, Théogène Urimubenshi confirmed the incident.

"I am working with other concerned authorities to see to it that justice is done.”

Niyitegeka also claims he has been receiving death threats through messages on his mobile phone.

Police told The New Times on Tuesday that investigations are still ongoing to establish the culprits and have in the mean time deployed local defence personnel at Niyitegeka’s home to prevent any potential danger.
