According to Dr Denis Muhoza, from the Ministry of Health the vaccination campaign is in response to four cases of wild polio virus reported in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo earlier this year.

Residents have been urged to report any form of peculiar sickness which may affect the body, especially the joints.

Dr John Karake, of Ruhengeri Hospital, warned that children can be infected when they eat food or drink water contaminated with the virus or by coming into direct contact with an infected person’s human waste or saliva.

The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are working to ensure that all children under 5 years are immunized.
