Man arrested for conning vulnerable students

RUSIZI – Police in Kamembe sector Rusizi district are holding a 25-year old man, Célestin Sibomana in connection with impersonation and extortion. Police said the suspect has been registering vulnerable students in various sectors of the district, and asking Rwf10, 000 from each of them claiming to be an employee of the Global Fund looking for children to be sponsored next year.

RUSIZI – Police in Kamembe sector Rusizi district are holding a 25-year old man, Célestin Sibomana in connection with impersonation and extortion.

Police said the suspect has been registering vulnerable students in various sectors of the district, and asking Rwf10, 000 from each of them claiming to be an employee of the Global Fund looking for children to be sponsored next year.

He was caught at a restaurant after police was tipped by one of the students who had fallen victim to his tricks,” said police.

According to police, he had already registered 29 students.
The suspect admitted to the allegations, saying he was influenced by poverty.

"I have been giving each of these students a form to fill before they would give me their money. I targeted those who finished senior three this year,” he said, adding that over 50 other students had already filled the forms and were looking for money to pay him.

Sibomana claims to be a student of Friend School, a Management and Information Technology institution in Kamembe.
