NYAGATARE - Several gacaca judges in Nyagatare district were on Monday rewarded certificates and medals after completing the trial of genocide cases.

At ceremonies that took place in different sectors of the district, Galacien Dusingizimana, an official in charge of legislation in the National Gacaca jurisdiction, said the role played by traditional judges is a demonstration that Rwandans can manage to solve their own problems.

"This is a great feat achieved by Rwandans. If you remember the negative campaign against Gacaca courts and the accomplishments they have registered, this is a sign that Rwandans can even do better,” he said.

"People spoke a lot against Gacaca as an institution but its conclusion is a clear case of its usefulness. This is an achievement worth emulating by other countries.”

Michael Rwibasira, a resident of Nyagatare sector said Gacaca has left a legacy of honesty within communities.
‘Gacaca taught people how to repent and to forgive, an experience that I never saw in other main stream courts,’ he said.
