MUSANZE – Police in Musanze district on Thursday used sniffer dogs to arrest a woman known as Mama Nabango who had allegedly been trafficking marijuana for the last 10 years in Ruhengeri town.

The suspect was caught with over 400 sachets of marijuana which were hidden beneath her traditional garment known as Kitenge.

Upon her arrest, the elderly woman confessed to having suppliers from Goma, in DR Congo, who give her the drugs to sell and distribute.

"I have been in this business for all this time but I regret the embarrassment I have caused my family especially the children,’’ she said.

After her arrest, police launched an operation targeting illegal drug users and other crime suspects, arresting 200 of them, the District Police Commander, Supt. Claude Kajeguhakwa said.

The police chief told The New Times that the swoop will give way to a screening exercise for the purposes of ascertaining those who will be liable for prosecution.
