Two-time champions DR Congo took a huge step towards the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 with a composed 2-0 victory over Angola at Moi International Sports Centre, Nairobi.
Second-half headers from Jephté Kitambala and substitute Jonathan Mokonzi sealed a result that put the Leopards firmly in the qualification race from Group A.
Earlier in the day, Morocco defeated Zambia 3-1, meaning Sunday’s showdown between DR Congo and Morocco will likely decide a semi-final berth, while Angola’s campaign ends with disappointment after failing to find the net.
Meanwhile, Morocco progressed to the last eight but were made to work hard against a stubborn defensive block.
Rabie Hrimat broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time after Morocco had struggled to convert a series of chances.
Ossama Lamlioui doubled the lead in the 67th minute, but Zambia responded three minutes later to cut the deficit.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities, Morocco’s finishing remained wasteful for much of the match.
The result lifts them to six points and second place in Group A behind Kenya, while Zambia are out of the tournament and remain bottom without a point.
