KAYONZA - Police and other security organs in Kabarondo- Kayonza district, yesterday destroyed several litres of illicit local brew and marijuana that had been impounded.

Security officials, said most of the dealers of the brew and drugs were second time offenders. Most of them had earlier been arrested and punished, but they have failed to reform, the officials said.

The products with different brand names included; Chief Waragi, Suzie Waragi and crude Waragi are allegedly smuggled from neighbouring Uganda.

Jean d’arc Uwera, the area court prosecutor, said the suspects face 5-years in jail or a fine not less than Rwf250,000 if convicted.

"We are actually witnessing a decrease in this business. This should be because of heavy punishments given to such criminals,” she said, adding that prosecutors prefer a jail term as a deterrent measure.

After getting caught, Asuman Nsengiyunva, 36, a marijuana farmer, vowed to abandon the activity
"There is a lot of money that pushes people into this business but because it’s illegal, I must give up the activity,” he said.
