MUHANGA – Parents in Gitarama town have completed the construction of a three-classroom block at Groupe Scolaire Gitarama.

The building worth Rwf13m was commissioned last weekend. It is meant to cater for students under the nine-year Basic Education programme.

The school has 140 students within its secondary section and 1,455 pupils in the primary section.

"We are happy to have completed the project,” said Adrian Bicyengu, the chairman of Parents Teacher’s Association (PTA).

Parents say they foresaw the need to build more classrooms in 2008 and consequently each parent contributed Rwf3000 per semester, to supplement the district’s budget.

During the ceremony, one parent Vénuste Semigabo, was recognised for being pivotal in changing the image of the school.

Fausta Mukanyandwi, the school’s director, thanked parents for their positive attitude towards the construction programme.

Meanwhile sources revealed that parents have agreed to build three more classrooms, worth Rwf12 million, by 2011.

Each parent has committed to contribute Rwf8000 towards the construction, while the school will contribute 15%.

Local leaders say there is need for a more aggressive campaign to rally residents behind the new education programmes.
