KAYONZA - Local leaders in the Eastern Province have toughened up on people violating animals’ rights.
It is wrong to for example, authorities to mistreat  animals during the process of having them transported to various market places one of the autorities said. 

According to, Banarbas Musonera, the veterinary officer of Mukarange sector, residents have been warned against torturing animals even those meant to be slaughtered. 

"We have constantly sensitised residents that it is bad to torture an animal, just because you are going to have it slaughtered. Torture happens especially when animals are being transported for sale or slaughter…we have started to punish and fine culprits,” he said. 

The development has however, attracted mixed reactions.
"We don’t intend to harm the animals, but we don’t have a better alternative while transporting them,” Simon Ndikubwabo, a goat dealer said.

Richard Mugisha, another resident said: "Animals are just that …I don’t see why we pretend to behave like westerners. If I am to transport  a goat to a market or a slaughter place, you don’t expect me to treat it as if it is fragile,” he said.
