HUYE - Sector officials in-charge of social affairs in Nyamagabe District, have resolved to sensitise residents on proper hygiene and sanitation.

The officials made the decision last week after completing a nine-day programme seminar geared at raising awareness among residents on their role in improving hygiene and sanitation. The seminar was conducted in Huye District.

"The rate of diseases that are reported has been found top be mainly caused by poor sanitation. To counter this  hygiene has to be brought to the fore.

Authorities are happy that hygiene standards are currently increasing according to statistics we get from health centres in the district,” Colette Kayitesi, the officer in-charge of health in the district said.

"Residents often ignore the benefits of hygiene and sanitation. We will encourage them to embrace modern methods to enable them stay healthy,” Edith Musafiri, another participant said.

Immaculée Mukarwego, the vice-Mayor in charge of social affairs attributed poor hygiene and sanitation within homes to poor mentality.

"In rural areas, especially, people go to work without even having a shower, arguing that there is no need to go working at the farms after bath. This is really disturbing”, Mukarwego stated.

"This mentality needs authorities’ intervention in order to change it,” she added.
