NYAGATARE - A community centre for widows and orphans has been commissioned in Karangazi Sector in Nyagatare District.

The community centre was constructed by New Beginning Rwanda, a project that was initiated by a UK-based Rwandan.

The centre has different wings including a health department, vocational training centre, nursery school and IT department.

Speaking in an interview shortly after the commissioning of the centre, on Saturday, Jackline Turner, the sponsor said she conceived the idea after revisiting her birth place in  2007. It was then that she became resolute in assisting the needy in the area.

"I was born here but later my parents were all killed. I was touched when I visited the area two years ago,” she said, urging beneficiaries to put the centre to good use.

"Area residents should actually have a sense of ownership of the centre and guard it jealously. We shall keep giving a helping hand to ensure improvement of social welfare in the area,” she said.

Reading the President’s message to Karangazi residents, the state minister for social welfare in the Ministry of Local government, Christine Nyatanyi, said the Head of State was glad to join them in the opening of development projects.

Condo Habiyambere, one of the beneficiaries thanked the project donor for promoting their social welfare in the district.

"It is amazing that we have received such form of support in our area. It is a very good gesture for those of us who are less fortunate,” he said.
