Rwandan musician Christiane Bukuru, commonly known as Boukuru, has described the opportunity to perform at the 2025 Pan-African Music Festival (FESPAM) going on in Brazzaville, Congo, as a big privilege for her as a musician.

Boukuru was part of the artistes who graced the stage on the opening day of FESPAM on Sunday, July 20. The festival runs through August 26.

The festival was officially opened by Congo Brazzaville President Denis Sassou N'Guesso and this year's edition marked the 12th iteration of the prestigious festival, coinciding with its 30th anniversary since inception.

The 2025 FESPAM carried the theme "Music and Its Role in Africa's Economy in This Era of Technology," highlighting the evolving industry of African music in the digital age.

This 12th edition represents an evolution in the festival's frequency, previously held every four years, it now takes place every two years, bringing together musicians and dancers from across Africa to celebrate the diversity and significance of local musical creativity.

Boukuru's performance was attended by notable dignitaries, including Congo Brazzaville's Minister of Culture, Marie-France Lydie Hélène Pongault; Rwanda's envoy to the Republic of Congo Parfait Busabizwa; Rwandans living in Brazzaville; and Congolese music enthusiasts.

The opening ceremony alone drew over 8,000 attendees, demonstrating the festival's significant cultural impact across the continent.

Taking the stage with confidence, Boukuru immediately connected with her audience, introducing herself to the audience that she is a proud Rwandan artist.

"I am a Rwandan artist, and I'm going to share with you, Rwandan culture," the artiste said.

Following her performance, Boukuru reflected on the significance of the opportunity. "Representing Rwanda is valuable, and coming here to Brazzaville is important for my artistry because it allows me to connect with others and learn from them, which helps elevate my craft."

She emphasized the personal and professional importance of performing on such a prestigious platform, saying that taking the stage is a special opportunity that allows to share her words and feelings with people.

"Representing Rwanda is valuable, and coming here to Brazzaville is important for my artistry because it allows me to connect with others and learn from them, which helps elevate my craft," said Boukuru.

The festival served as a crucial networking platform that has opened doors to future international collaborations and opportunities.

"I got to network as much as possible, so I have a number of invitations through this, so for sure globalization has indeed started. I am grateful," she revealed.

FESPAM 2025 represents a collaborative effort between the Government of Congo Brazzaville, the African Union, and UNESCO, underscoring its importance as a platform for continental cultural exchange. Artists from various African countries joined Boukuru in celebrating the rich diversity of African musical traditions.
