KARONGI – Scores of students were yesterday left with no alternative but to return to school due to scarcity of public transport as the school term came to a close. Stranded students filled the town’s streets as they waited for ONATRACOM buses which were also not enough to transport all of them.

Most of the affected students are those whose schools are located far from the town centre.
Speaking to The New Times, Jean de Dieu Niyonsaba, a grade four student from Groupe Scholaire St Joseph in Gashyari sector, expressed disappointment after failing to get a vehicle.
"It is a major problem because there is community work (Umuganda) this Saturday. One can’t imagine staying for another weekend in school,” Niyonsaba lamented.
He added that it is not the first time because during the opening of the new term, students experience shortage of transport.
When contacted, an official from the state run transport company, ONATRACOM, said that the transport company would do its best to alleviate the shortage very soon.
