APR 81-77 REG (APR lead series 3-1)

APR basketball club on Wednesday, July 9, beat Rwanda Energy Group (REG) 81-77 in Game 4 of the best-of-seven-series in the Rwanda Basketball League finals to move one game away from winning the championship.

Point guard Adonis Filer of the APR posted a game-high 21 points in the tense game held at the BK Arena and helped the army side avoid a late comeback from the electricians.

The finals have been shaped by so much intensity on the court because the champions not only take home the trophy and cash prize, but also represent Rwanda in the Basketball Africa League (BAL).

REG put up a strong performance at the beginning of the game, winning the first quarter 25-9 before APR bounced back to cut the gap by just two points after taking the second quarter 31-17 to go into half-time trailing REG 42-40.

Returning for the second half, APR started from where the stopped before the break and took the third quarter 25-10 to open a 13-point lead going into the last quarter.

REG threw it all on the country in an attempt to pose a big upset in the finals when they cut APR’s lead to within just two points, trailing 77-79 behind APR with 13 second to play. However, James Maye Jr got his tactics right in the timeout as his men held on to win the game 81-77 to extend their series lead to 3 games to 1.

Filer has been starring in the finals and his individual exploits in Game 4 were crucial to leading APR to the win. His counterparts Youssou Ndoye and Axel Mpoyo contributed 19 points and 15 points respectively.

Congolese center Garmine Kande Kieli dropped 28 points and Enock Isezerano added 16 points for REG but it wasn’t enough to help the club even the series.

If APR win Game 5 on Friday, July 11, they will be crowned champions of Rwanda for the third time in a row.
