The health sector, according to the Minister of Health Dr. Richard Sezibera, is on course towards achieving its targets under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This is commendable, and by agreeing on particular areas that need improvement, the sector has its priorities right.

The MDGs are mainly based on the determination to end extreme poverty by 2015. Most of the issues as stated in the MDGs are intertwined with extreme poverty.

It can therefore be argued, that many of the problems that are addressed in the MDGs are a direct result of extreme poverty.

At the same time, many are sceptical as to whether it is still realistic to say that all the targets will have been achieved by 2015. Nevertheless, the challenge is there and the targets are clear and concrete. There can never be any excuse for not aiming at achieving the MDGs.

All stakeholders have to work, with the same determination and sense of urgency, if the MDGs are to be realised. This requires concerted efforts.

The stakeholders need to, present progress reports, in order to showcase what has been achieved, and what remains to be done. This is important, in ensuring that there is even progress, towards achieving the goals.

By clearly stating where the health sector has reached, and what remains to be done in order to meet the targets, we are able to see that appropriate measures have been taken.
