HUYE - Eugene Rwamucyo, the Genocide suspect who was discovered working in a French hospital last week, was served with a life sentence by a Gacaca court in Butare a month ago, it has emerged.

Rwamucyo was tried in absentia and found guilty for Genocide crimes committed in Butare during the 1994 Genocide.

"He was a member of the notorious ‘war committee’ that planned and executed Genocide against the Tutsi in Butare,” the president of Ngoma Gacaca court, Jean Baptiste Ndahumba told The New Times.

Rwamucyo, a medical doctor, worked at the University Centre for Public Health (CUSP), at the University Teaching hospital and lectured at the National University of Rwanda.

He faces fresh charges today (Thursday)for Genocide crimes committed at the National University of Rwanda and at the University teaching hospital during the ongoing trial of perpetrators of Genocide at the University. He is on the list of 45 people suspected to have played a key role in the killings.

Rwamucyo is accused of planning the killing of Tutsi students and patients at the University teaching hospital. Over 400 students and staff at the National University of Rwanda are believed to have been killed during the Genocide.

Rwamucyo’s cover was accidentally blown by one of his enraged patients. It is alleged that he made some derogatory remarks over his patients weight which raised the latter’s suspicion.

In a movie-like scenario, a search on the internet by the patient’s husband showed Rwamucyo was a wanted Genocide suspect. He has since been suspended by the hospital indefinitely.

In a related incident, another Rwandan doctor wanted for Genocide working in France is the subject of investigations.
Sosthene Munyemana works in Villeneuve-sur-Lot at the Saint-Cyr hospital in Bordeaux.

He is accused of widely participating in massacres in Tumba, also in Butare.
